We were expecting to find ourselves with medals, and a letter of thanks from the British Government for saving them from a German spy – but no letter came. Instead, one day we were called into Headmaster Twining’s study to find a tall man with blond hair and a monocle standing there on the carpet.

‘Boys,’ he said. ‘My name – well, you may call me M. You are to be congratulated on your enthusiasm. You solved your case very cleverly, and caught a spy. But I’m afraid there’s a problem. This incident … you may have slightly misunderstood what is at stake. There are many German spies at large in our country at the moment, and because of that, it is important for our Government to keep an eye on both its own upper classes and those of Europe. The man you knew as Prince was part of that effort – on our side. He was sent by our Service to watch the boys and masters at Weston, but I’m afraid he took his mission much too far. The Hanrahan incident – which he ordered, using some really rather unsavoury types he’d met through a previous assignment – was deeply regrettable, as was the attack on young Van der Velde. Prince was also tracking your librarian, to monitor him; of course, the man is quite innocent of any wrongdoing. Prince has been removed from his post. But our Service’s effort will – must – continue. All I ask is that you keep silent about what I have told you, and that in future you do not let your detective missions interfere with our greater effort. Do you understand?’

‘What?’ said George. ‘No!’

George is certainly the braver of the two of us. I didn’t want to say anything.

‘I believe I mis-spoke,’ said the man, raising one eyebrow at him. ‘You must understand and obey me, for your own good. So, do you?’

‘We do,’ I said at last. I trod on George’s foot.

‘Excellent,’ said the man. ‘And, by the way, I really do applaud you for your excellent investigative work. There is only one person I know who could match your wits – but never mind her. Perhaps it’s a good thing you don’t know each other.’

And you know, Hazel, it took me until very recently to realize it – but I think that girl might have been Daisy! And that man was – well, you know who he really is, and you know him better than I do. I only ever saw him once. That is why I am telling you this story now, and trusting that you will not pass it on further.

So that is the story of how George and I solved a case, and were mistaken, but everything still came right in the end. And, of course, that was only the beginning of our adventures … but those are stories for another time.
